I AM amazed at Durham County Council's proposal not to support Jonathan Ruffer's ambitious proposal to breathe new life into Bishop Auckland's dying town centre and to bring some culture to local inhabitants (Echo, May 23).

It can only be because the socialist council is once more against any new initiative provided by private enterprise and money. It is more politics of envy from one of the few remaining Labour strongholds which still mistakenly believes that only the state can do anything for people.
