I WAS disappointed to read (Echo, May 13) that J Edwards, speaking on behalf of Northallerton Civic Society, was opposed to the development at the northern approach to Northallerton which was to incorporate a bridge over the Middlesbrough railway line and thereby certainly reduce traffic congestion in the town.

He is wrong to suggest that this will not be helpful in improving traffic flow at low gates which is now becoming a serious problem.

Under the proposals, traffic travelling towards Northallerton and Darlington will be able to turn left onto the relief road, over the new bridge into Stokesley Road and then left to Teesside and the A19 or right into Northallerton or to Thirsk avoiding the level crossing.

Traffic approaching from Darlington wishing to access Romanby, Bedale, the Dales and the A1 (south) will be able to turn right, through the trading estate and proceed avoiding the level crossing. Which currently is an often-used option.

The only problem I envisage with the proposal is that south bound traffic may use the road through Romanby green to access Leeming Bar and the A1 (M) and this certainly needs to be addressed prior to the scheme going ahead.

This is an ambitious and much needed development.

A Wilson, Brompton.
