I DO not share Philip Draper's anxiety at the loss of the UKs "standing" and "influence" on the world stage (Echo, May 16).

After our ill-advised involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, the UK might benefit from keeping a low profile in world affairs.

It is about time we realised that we no longer are regarded by the rest of the world as having a divine right to meddle in world problems.

We should stop trying to act as a major player in the modern world but play our part in Nato and instead, attend to the many domestic problems as outlined in Mr Draper's letter.

Our British Empire days are long gone: let's accept that and stop living in the past.
