I READ Scott Wilson's recent article about the Kevin Pietersen situation (Echo, May 16) and agree with him completely.

However, I think Pietersen will have to play for England this summer.

He is the Nigel Farage of English cricket - it can't do without him.

The future of our game is at stake, the game is dying.

For all their success in recent years, Durham County rely on Durham County Council for loans and planning permission to survive.

At grass roots level the situation is worse. Just look at the number of games conceded because of lack of players.

I have noticed a massive lack of interest.

Last week, I saw a game where the opening batsman arrived at the wicket to discover he had forgotten his pads, five players didn't take guard and the opening bowlers were urged to keep going because no one else had bowled this season.

Pietersen was acceptable when England were winning, so why not now when his unique talent is so badly needed?

England need good performances this summer to stimulate fans' interest or the game, unfortunately, will disappear.
