I WAS delighted to read your article "Ducking the issue" (Echo, Apr 13) about Ruth Jowett, of Darlington, who has secretly been leaving crocheted ducks across the region to raise awareness of blood, bone marrow and organ donation.
I'm pleased to say that she is not alone in supporting this very worthwhile cause. I, too, have been knitting little yellow ducks since I heard about the project in January at my local Women's Institute meeting in Newton Aycliffe.
Since then I have left ducks in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Spain not to mention one left in the school at Beamish Museum. Ducks are ready to go to Canada and Peru later this year.
The one left in Phnom Penh is the only duck to date that has been registered on the yellow duck world map in the country of Cambodia.
It was so rewarding while out walking with the family on Sutton Bank at Easter to secretly hear the excited cries of a little boy skipping happily along shouting Eggbert (the name of the duck we'd left there) over and over again!
If we can bring even a little joy while achieving our aims then it makes it all worthwhile.
My very close friend has a son with cystic fibrosis so it's a cause dear to my own heart. Let's spread the word far and wide and encourage everyone to visit the website thelittleyellowduckproject.org so that we can save lives and learn what it's all about.
Liz Gleave, Newton Aycliffe.
