SINCE October, there have been a dozen or so letters and articles in The Northern Echo regarding the danger to pedestrians of allowing cycling in the centre of Darlington's pedestrian heart.

The authorities – the council, the police – have always said "give us evidence, give us names". But now Cllr Dot Long says (Echo, Mar 24) that using the name of the stricken Coates family is disgraceful.

In February Mary Coates, whose husband, Brian, is believed to have been startled or knocked down by a cyclist and suffered life-changing injuries, presented a petition of 750 names against cycling in the town centre.

So yes, let us have another petition or an inquiry into pedestrian centre cycling habits.
