I WISH to advise readers of a very strange, but remarkably ordinary, visit that occurred last Saturday morning at my home in Durham City.

I was visited by one of the three councillors who serves on the county council for my area. It was part of their electoral promise to meet and to discuss local plans and concerns with all who express any interest in local government matters.

Although diametrically opposed to Councillor Patrick Conway (Labour) in just about every way politically possible, I found the meeting to be both refreshing and pleasant as I was able to bring up my point of view upon several items of specific relevance to the area I live in as well as the whole county.

We did not have a great deal of time, as he had many more calls besides mine, but the experience was most refreshing!

So, a rare congratulations to a small band of political opponents from one who is politically aware, if not, unfortunately, politically active. They have been seen to keep at least one promise made during an election – although, sadly, it may be one of the very few promises kept by any politician, local or national, in this badly run and dysfunctional country of ours!
