YOUR use of the 1886 picture of Durham on the front of Saturday's Echo Memories (Echo, Feb 21) prompted several thoughts in relation to the current furore regarding student safety.

The photographer had posed the six boys and the older lady on the parapet of the weir, expecting the boys to exercise common sense by not going into the river.

The steps leading down from the houses behind the boys, in Back Silver Street, had no hand rails or guards, but access to the river was unrestricted.

Right centre behind the outfall pipe a fishing net can be seen drying, so the river was unpolluted and fishing was regarded as a safe occupation.

Why cannot the student of today cope with everyday life?
