THE closure of care homes by Durham County Durham is still in the news and I hope it will remain so for much longer.

I followed this story from the first mention of the closures to the present day.

I was pleased to read the story about the experiences of councillor John Shuttleworth, whose mother was a victim of the closures, and the letter in HAS by Joy Urwin (Feb 17).

Ms Urwin correctly stated that cuts have to be made but it was the Labour-led county council which decided where the axe should fall.

They chose to close care homes and happily let people in County Durham think the Government was to blame.

During the consultation process I noticed a lack of support from the MPs in whose constituencies the homes were down for closure. If anything, a total lack of support.

Now the General Election is just around the corner the same MPs are re-appearing in the news.

I say to all the people who have been affected by these closures, either directly or indirectly, let's have a change - bring in the new.

These MPs and councillors have been on the gravy train for far too long.

Tony Stainthorpe, Durham.
