RALPH MUSGRAVE (HAS, Feb 17) suggests that the abuse directed at Jews in Britain is “not actually a rise in anti-Semitism at all” but is “caused by the brutal shelling of Gaza by the Israelis”.

Israel’s violence towards the Palestinians can never provide any excuse for anti-Semitism, such as indiscriminate attacks on Jews, synagogues or Jewish cemeteries.

Many Jews, in any case, agree that Israel’s policy towards the Palestinians as immoral, disproportionate and oppressive, and ultimately not in Israel’s best interests.

The same argument applies to Islamophobia.

As Mr Musgrave says, violent jihad has been a part of Muslim history; but this is no excuse for prejudice, hostility and abuse directed against Muslims in general. As Islamist terrorism has spread worldwide, there has been a huge increase in random attacks on law-abiding Muslims, who bear no responsibility for the murderous activities of the terrorists.

The terrorists are trying to incite violence between people of different faiths; we should not give them that satisfaction.
