I CRINGED at the reasons given by Bishop Auckland councillor Colin Race for defecting from Labour to Ukip (Echo, Jan 21).

He proclaims his continuing support for working families yet he joins Ukip.

He is clearly unaware that there is already a national party which exists for people like himself for those who are Labour by tradition but are drawn to the philosophy of Ukip: it is called New Deal.

The fact that he is not even aware of its existence shows clearly his ignorance of politics; he doesn't even know about a national party designed precisely (supports hard-working families) to reflect his views.

What a joke!

The fact that he doesn't get it shows clearly his incapacity for public office.

John Armstrong, Bishop Auckland.
