THE editor claims (Echo, Jan 19) that what tipped the Northern Echo into not re-publishing Charlie Hebdo front page was a question raised by local Muslim cleric Tahir Selby, namely: “What good does it do to stir this up even more?”

I can explain “what good” is done by re-publication.

A very good way of imposing your views on others by brute force is to claim to be “offended” by views you don’t like, and to kill those expressing those views.

Violent behavior should be stamped on vigorously and ridiculed loud and clear until those perpetrating it and those claiming to be offended shut up.

And re-publishing cartoons is one method of ridicule.

If I migrated to a Muslim country, I certainly wouldn’t demand they changed their culture (eg bans on alcohol) to accommodate my wishes.

Immigrants who don’t like any aspect of a host country’s culture have a very simple option open to them: go back to where they came from.
