AS a Newcastle fan, I was surprised and disappointed at Alan Pardew's departure to Crystal Palace (Echo, Jan 3).

Sadly he was never popular with most fans and, barring bringing some long overdue silverware to the club, I don't think that would have ever changed.

With the infamous head-butting incident in mind, I would stop just short of calling him a gentleman, but I wish him well in his onerous task at Crystal Palace.

For Newcastle, I would suggest Alan Shearer as manager, despite his unsuccessful and very short tenure as manager at the club some years ago.

Another very welcome visitor would be from Lady Luck, who for far too long has deserted the hallowed turf at Saint James' Park.

Geoff Gregg, Tursdale.
