ALEC TELFORD wondered why the BBC Sport Personality of the Year should be awarded to someone unwilling to contribute to the country by paying legitimate taxes (HAS, Dec 18).

As much as I would agree with him, I would point out that the government is happy to ennoble similar tax avoiding people so that they are then able to sit in the House of Lords.

They are also allowed to support the Conservative Party financially. The sports personality awards seem quite minor in comparison.
