I AM sure most people watching the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Awards were impressed to see the team award go to the England Women's Rugby Team, who won the Women's World Cup when they beat Canada in the final during the summer in France. The team was captained by Katy McLean MBE who plays for Darlington Mowden Park RFC.

My own rugby club, Durham City, used to have a super ladies team a few years ago but sadly the team lacked continuity and we did not have enough ladies to fill the breach as they got married to rugby players and produced more rugby players.

I must take my hat off to Bishop Auckland RFC who now boast a hundred plus female players at various age groups. It has taken them about 18 months to do wonders for the ladies' game at Bishop.

All rugby clubs in my view should have a ladies team. They add to the club immensely.

I hope Durham has a ladies' team again and I hope the men's England team can emulate the England ladies and bring the Webb Elliss Trophy to England again next year.
