WHILE I agree with North Yorkshire's Deputy Chief Constable Tim Madgwick that construction workers on the A1 are entitled to a safe working environment the relevant word here is "working".

I have had the misfortune over recent years of having to spend many weekends driving up and down the A1 and across the M62 through endless miles of speed restrictions and seeing little sign of anybody actually working. Add to this long stretches where there is no sign of any work being done at all and is it any wonder people ignore the speed limits?

May be Mr Madgwick and his colleagues should start looking at issuing fines for unnecessary obstruction of a public highway .
