IN a recent Northern Echo article, Robert Ellis, head coach of the Spennymoor Boxin Academy stated that boxing can change people's lives (Echo, Oct 15).

I agree, but fear that because the object of his "sport" is to batter your opponent's brain until he/she is unconscious, the possible brain damage caused may not be the life changing experience Mr Ellis had in mind.

Should we not encourage people to participate in less brutal and violent sports?

No doubt boxing fans will claim comparisons with rugby and other contact sports but no other activity requires you to punch your opponent's head until a knock-out is achieved.

Time to end this barbaric so-called sport?

John Hodgson, Spennymoor.
