DR Stan Higgins (HAS, Sept 20) suggests the North-East missed an opportunity for greater autonomy when we voted no to a regional assembly, but he fails to explain why this occurred.

Many in the North-East regard with a great deal of suspicion any further introduction of yet another level of governance and hence possible taxation. At the same time we can rest assured that this will lead to extensive committees whose only interest will be be self preservation.

Many readers can quote examples of where and when the existing authorities have either overlooked or ignored public concern, such as imposition of a unitary authority in Durham against the majority of the residents’ wishes. Local people have had change thrust upon them without due regard to their objections, such as the collection of refuse, development of Durham Market Square and supermarket developments waived through.

Although Dr Higgins rightly highlights the difference in investment between London and the North-East, I think local people would justifiably be wary of seeing monies handed over to similar quangos and executives.
