I WAS amused to read the letter from Peter Jefferies (HAS, August 27) regarding those he calls “Armchair Generals” who write to Hear All Sides.

I think it’s safe to say I was one of those generals Peter had in mind and I would like to thank him for the promotion because in local soccer circles I never got past the rank of “midfield corporal”.

However, I’ve always thought that Hear All Sides was a vehicle where readers could give their opinions on current events whether they be global, national or local.

There are others who like to share amusing stories and some who write about memories past.

I read Hear All Sides most days and if I like the topic I’ll read on and if I don’t, I simply move on to the next letter.

The worst kind of letter writers in my opinion are those who moan because they’ve got nothing else to write about.

Incidentally, Peter made a reference to Winston Churchill. There are some who would class him as a military amateur after the disasters of Gallipoli, for example.
