THE letters page has been full of discussion about North-East football greats in the past week.
I can remember when Newcastle’s top players were on wages of £20 a week.
Now they are paid like film stars.
I believe big money entered the game in 1957 when John Charles, the Welsh international and Leeds United player, was sold for a record £65,000 to Juventus.
At the time, nobody could imagine this kind of money in football.
