IT seems as if the days of the James Herriot-type of vet is becoming increasingly rare.

On a recent visit my vet had a large shop selling animal food and toys etc. It had more in common with Pets At Home than a vet’s. Our animals are insured against vets bills (an absolute necessity) because they are ridiculous. I wonder how many poorly animals are put to sleep because of the cost?

Dentists charge thirty grand for a new set of gnashers that would look far better in the mouth of a Grand National winner. Are vets going the same way?

There is a big new veterinary hospital being built just off the A1 at Bradbury. It must be costing a fortune.

This is all well and good for those of us with full pet insurance.

But what about those without who can’t afford insurance but love their animals regardless?
