I NEVER met my paternal grandfather as he died after the First World War and, because my Dad was young when he died, I knew nothing about him except that he was buried in Redhills Cemetery in Durham which is now disused and overgrown. I was always told that he had no headstone – times were tight.
Imagine my surprise on walking through the area one day and discovering that the War Graves Commission had erected a standard marker.
My family now has dates to work on and are trying to find out more about him. Well done to them and thanks.
Marie Pratt, Durham.
