IT was sad to see bikes, one with a vintage hand-built frame, in the skips on a recent visit to Darlington’s Whessoe Road recycling centre. They must have been destined for the waste metal crusher.

To my mind, it would be more sensible recycling policy to offer bikes at their scrap value to the second-hand bike shop in Skinnergate for spares or repair.

This shop, Bikestop, operated by a charitable organisation, renovates bikes and sells them at prices affordable to people of limited means.
