ONCE again, Durham County Council has demonstrated an amazing grasp of both timing and co-ordination using tax payers’ money.

Some time ago, during the Thinford roundabout saga, I asked for comment from the Highways Department. Again, I seek an explanation.

My father-in-law lives in Fishburn. Four or five weeks ago, Durham County Council resurfaced his lane, leaving, for the first time, a smooth, pothole-free road.

This week they arrived again to dig up the road to widen it by one metre.

Isn’t there an award for this type of waste?

However,we can take solace in the fact that every councillor is supplied with a tablet in order that they can monitor these continuing waste examples.

Any comment anyone?

SOME £100,000 has been spent to resurface Front Street in West Auckland (Echo, Apr 1).

However, nothing has been done to improve South View, in nearby Evenwood.

I am amazed that an unadopted road has had such a sum spent on its repair. One must recognise that there are approximately 12 residential properties, a private nursing home, a bed-and-breakfast and a bakery/cafe on this stretch of road.

However, there are numerous other roads within a five-mile radius of West Auckland which have not been resurfaced.

I cannot give you a figure of the number of potholes that require repair, nor can I give readers a figure of how many that the council could have repaired for £100,000.

Last year, I reported a number of potholes in the area of the Oval Street, in St Helen Auckland, and some very minor repairs were carried out due to money not being available.

Durham County Council should really review what it intends to spend the funds available on.

I think the money should go towards repairing more potholes to assist motorists who are putting their cars at risk using the roads.

Lastly, did the council actually receive any contributions from the residents or businesses in Front Street that have benefited from this action?

May I also wish the villagers of Evenwood good luck in their fight for South View.
