A NORTH Yorkshire waste and recycling business has secured a deal to handle the waste produced by a local land-based college.

Todd Waste Management of Thirsk has been appointed to deal with the waste generated at Askham Bryan College's York-based campus.

The long-term contract, will see the company collect five different types of waste on site which will be sorted and processed, making sure it is diverted from landfill, allowing the college to boost their green credentials.

Matthew Pearson, Todd Waste Management’s commercial director, said: "Staff and students at the College are already keen to learn more about the zero to landfill process, something we will work with the College on delivering the correct message for the best results."

The contract will initially have 35 wheelie bins at the college for on-site segregation of glass, food, paper and cardboard, and cans and plastic bottles as well as containers for general waste.

Mr Pearson said: "We met the team at Askham Bryan College a couple of times prior to being awarded the contract. The meetings allowed us to build a trusting relationship and refine a bespoke site waste management plan that suited both parties. The meetings will continue to ensure the best service is provided and to work with the college, both staff and students."

Geoff Metcalfe, head of college estates, said: "The College is continually looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and teach our student body about the importance of living in a greener environment. We are delighted to be working with Todd’s in achieving this common goal."
