Brown must show vision
GORDON BROWN cancelled the autumn
election so that, he said, he could expound
his vision of Britain more clearly.
We are still in the dark over his grand
ideas for, say, health and education.
If Mr Brown stood for anything, it was
his deep-seated and honourable desire to
tackle poverty. He was Chancellor in a
Government that had a good record in taking
steps to assist the poor - most notably
the minimum wage.
But the 10p tax fiasco has hurt the poorest
most and damaged - possibly even destroyed
- Mr Brown's reputation.
MPs will today debate Mr Brown's concessions,
uncertain of who will be compensated
and whether that compensation
will be permanent or just a one-off payment.
At the moment, Mr Brown is giving the
country neither depth of detail nor
breadth of vision.
But now - with the Conservatives revitalised
at the national level, the Liberal
Democrats offering a credible alternative
in many parts of the North-East, and the
extremists lurking amid the dregs of disillusionment
- Mr Brown should be enthusing
and inspiring. He must offer a
sliver of hope, an inkling of his big ideas,
but instead we just get this dour dread
that things aren't going to get any better.
Prayers for fairness
THE Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu,
is giving a powerful lead on the appalling
situation in Zimbabwe.
The long-delayed results of the presidential
election may be announced today.
We pray that they are fair and that they
do not provide Mr Mugabe with reason to
unleash more politically-motivated violence
upon his own people.
