Going down to the wire

11:02am Monday 15th March 2010

WE are seeing the most interesting race for the Premier League title in years, with three teams all in with a genuine say in the destiny of the championship.

And the same can be said about the race for power in the General Election.

New polls over the weekend suggested that the lead between the Tories and Labour has narrowed again, with the Lib Dems becoming increasingly excited at the prospect of a hung parliament.

These are worrying times for David Cameron who should be shooting at an open goal, yet finds himself nervously shuffling his defence.

The key to Number Ten is clearly the economy and the “devil you know” factor is at the heart of the narrowing polls.

There is deep concern around the country about the speed and depth of impending cuts, especially here in the North-East where we are so heavily reliant on the public sector.

Chancellor Alistair Darling yesterday insisted that next week’s Budget will not spell out any new spending cuts, concentrating instead on measures to encourage economic growth.

“The economy is safe with us” message is central to Labour’s chances of an election victory so it is hardly surprising that the Budget will be careful not to rock a boat which is sailing along quite happily.

We all know the financial deficit has to be tackled, but it has to be handled with care.

The result of the 2010 General Election will hang on whether David Cameron and George Osborne are seen as too much of a gamble compared to the experience of the devils we know – Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling.
