THE horror of war is never something to celebrate. The centenary of the start of the First World War is, however, a milestone which warrants special commemoration.

The Northern Echo: Poppy field

Earlier this year, The Northern Echo launched its “£100,000 for 100 Years” appeal in aid of the Phoenix House rehabilitation centre, established at Catterick Garrison by the Help For Heroes charity.

It is our way of marking the centenary of the beginning of the Great War by providing practical help for soldiers who return from today’s battlefields suffering from physical and mental injuries.

This Sunday, we publish a special Remembrance Sunday edition, featuring photographs and names of those from this region who gave their lives.

The commemorative edition also contains a unique collection of historic wartime front pages from the archives of The Northern Echo, and chronicles how the communities of the North-East and North Yorkshire will mark the centenary.

The front and back covers are the work of acclaimed North-East artist Mackenzie Thorpe, who generously responded to our request for creative assistance by saying: “It would be an honour.”

The beautiful works of art have been under wraps but they will be revealed on our website – www.northernecho.co.uk – between the carefully chosen times of 19:14 and 19:18 on Saturday evening.

The Sunday edition will be on sale at newsagents across the region for £1 – 100 pence for 100 years – and 10p for every copy sold will go to the Phoenix House appeal.

The Northern Echo always wears its poppy with pride on the approach to Remembrance Sunday.

On Sunday, our poppy will be worn with special pride.
