ELITE cyclists will be testing their stamina when they take part in the first East Cleveland Klondike GP at the weekend.

Riders from leading British teams including Madison Genesis, JLT Condor, One Pro Cycling and Bradley Wiggins’ Team Wiggins have been provisionally entered into the first round of British Cycling’s Spring Cup.

The race, which starts at noon on Sunday, will take around four hours to complete with rolling road closures taking place for ten to 15 minute periods as police lead the peloton around the course.

Throughout the race, residents on the route are being encouraged to decorate their houses in yellow and British racing green to show their support when the race comes through their village.

Councillor Mary Lanigan, chairwoman of the East Cleveland Big Local, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the progress of this event. A great deal has been achieved in a very short space of time.

“East Cleveland is a very unique area showing off our coastal area, moorland and villages.

“The communities have come together to provide a day to be remembered, with parties and events going on in all our towns and villages.”

Spectators will be able to line the route to cheer on the 140-elite riders are through complete three and half laps for the circuit as part of their preparation work for the Tour de Yorkshire at the end of April.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “With stunning scenery and some of the country’s top riders competing, it looks set to be a fantastic event. Whether you are a cycling fan or not, I’d encourage people to come out, support the race and enjoy what will be a brilliant day.”

Cllr Carl Quartermain, cabinet member for jobs, skills, and leisure, said: “We are very excited to be hosting this brand new event that brings together the communities of East Cleveland and showcase our beautiful towns and villages. We are always keen to grow, encourage and support unique events like the East Cleveland Klondike GP as it can only be a benefit to the economy of Redcar and Cleveland.”
