WHY can’t politicians’ wives let them get on with it?

You wouldn’t expect the wife of the chief executive of M&S or a major bank to keep popping along to her husband’s work and telling everyone what a good job he’s doing, but that’s what politicians’ wives increasingly do.

If they’re going to do that maybe they should have a uniform, like the American wives of Ryder Cup players, and be put on the payroll. Oops, quite a few already are...

Latest to add her two pennorth is Justine Thornton, who gave a speech saying that she is “more than a dress.” Of course she is. She’s a successful human rights lawyer as well as a mother. Yet she still vows to spend the months before the election boosting her husband’s chance of winning.

Not a good idea. If she clearly doesn’t think she can manage on his own, why should the rest of us?
