THE great advantage of a typewriter over a computer – apart from the ability to work through power cuts and not baffle you with idiotic unpredictable behaviour – is that it’s just the right height for a nap.

Arms folded, head down and the worst that happens is that you get the impression of the exclamation mark on your eyebrow. Computer keyboards just aren’t as comfy.

I learned to nap in the office in my first job when we still used big Adler typewriters and spent most lunchtimes in the pub. Ten minutes snooze and I was raring to go.

I was ahead of the times.

Japanese businesses are now introducing nap times for workers because they’ve been proved to beat the slump in the middle of the working day and improve productivity.

Tempting, isn’t it? Offices with beds, comfy armchairs, squishy sofas… you could almost look forward to going to work.
