SOME contestants in this series of The Great British Sewing Bee have shown they have a soft spot for vintage fashions and fabrics. David’s attempts to get his prom dress model to stand on the table next to the sewing machine so he could hem her frock while she was still wearing it also suggests a rather retro attitude to health and safety.
But how do the remaining stitchers feel about period sewing techniques?
We’re about to find out as Patrick Grant and May Martin present them with an original 1930s pattern for a silky blouse, which doesn’t have the helpful modern markings they are used to. And just to make it extra tricky, they’ll be using a sewing machine from the same decade.
