Bumpy journey ahead at Durham Tees Valley Airport

IT is, of course, good news that a deal has been announced today to secure the immediate future of Durham Tees Valley Airport.

Fears that it could be placed in administration have undermined confidence in the Tees Valley and I welcome the end of that period of uncertainty.

However, it is clear that the airport cannot continue in its present loss-making form. Something has to change.

There has been disappointment over the failure of the Vantage Airport Group to back up the promises it made when it bought a 65 per cent stake in Peel Airports Ltd from the Peel Group in June last year.

It is hard to see what genuine efforts were made to secure new routes and market the airport properly.

Peel Group has now decided to buy back control but clear questions remain over what the future holds. Confidence needs to be restored with a clear public vision of Durham Tees Valley's long-term viability as a commercial airport.

The Peel Group is a development company and its strategic planning director Peter Nears has been quick to point to the importance of being able to develop the land around the airport.

"We need to do this in association with the local authority stakeholders," he says in today's Northern Echo. In other words, the six North-East councils holding minority shares have some challenging decisions ahead.

How can they balance the importance of retaining the airport while making sure that land development does not have a damaging impact on neighbouring towns.

There is bound to be turbulence ahead.

Perhaps if more was known over the development plans of the Peel Group then the public might be able to comment better. One thing is certain, if in fact this airport is considered "important" to the Tees Valley, why then do the local councils seemingly operate a hands off policy when it comes to development plans? Could it perhaps be that a joined up Tees Valley is only an idea on paper and that the plans of the airport's owners really depends on the Tees Valley being a reality? For the airport to work it needs to be more than a flight to Heathrow or tour package's; it needs to become a true "Gateway" to this region from the real "Global" economy.

So long as it continues to be called Durham Tees Valley airport then it is not going anywhere. What part of 'Teesside Airport' does Peel not understand?

As a cub reporter on the late Evening Despatch, I won the glamorous title ‘air correspondent’, which in the main meant sitting in on dull airport committee meetings – although I did once get a freebie to Spain and back in a day!

Then it was called Teesside Airport – what was wrong with that? Whether it’s Luton, Heathrow, John Lennon, John F K, the name is a tag, not a description of whom the airport serves.

Then it was owned and run by the surrounding local authorities. What was wrong with that? Those were the days when transport was seen as a public service.

Unfortunately we now live in times when if any enterprise – be it the health service, education or the local football club – doesn’t make a profit (or at least meet arbitrary targets) it has to be written off.

Sadly, only the balance sheet counts – not the quality of life.

I'll go along with that timssinc. If you have the time, would you mind popping along to MSG and telling Peel all that?
