Cashing in on scandal

The national papers are full of pictures of John Terry's mistress, Vanessa Perroncel, in what is a clear pose outside a health club.

Miss Perroncel is pictured fiddling with her hair and with the word "Juicy" embroidered on her jogging pants.

This is not a case of someone trying to stay out of the media spotlight. She hung around long enough to make sure the paparazzi got their best shots.

This is someone putting herself in the shop window after engaging Max Clifford to sort out the best possible deal to cash in on her affair with the England captain.

The top offer on the table so far is reportedly £250,000 from a Sunday paper but, but with speculation that she's had an affair with another Premier League footballer, it's early days.

Forget the Haiti earthquake and our former Prime Minister appearing before the Iraq war inquiry, this will be the biggest-selling news story of the year.

Sad, isn't it?

Can't say I blame her for wanting to cash in on her story. What's shameful is that there is a demand for it, not that she is doing it.

That papers like the Echo stay clear of all the celebrity nonsense is why they're worth reading.

That said, is it really any less daft that so much of the news is taken up with sport?
