An Owen goal

"Is that a joke?"

That was the instinctive reaction of a friend of mine who supports Manchester United when I told him that Sir Alex Ferguson was about to sign Michael Owen.

Disbelief seems to be the general response to the news that Owen is heading for the Red Devils after his Newcastle United nightmare.

The Magpies are well shot of Owen who proved an expensive flop at St James' Park.

Only the likes of Stoke and Hull appeared to be prepared to take a gamble on the injury-prone striker but Manchester United have made a shock move.

Owen's not the player he was - I reckon Fergie's had a bit too much sun.

Put Owen in a decent team and he'll get 20 plus goals a season. I'm a staunch Newcastle fan, but the dross we had to watch this last season was unbelievable! Owen did suffer injuries, and indeed looked like he had lost some heart for the game, but he got no service up front and a world class player doesn't just 'lose it' over one season. To be fair, I hate Man U, but Sir Alex didn't get to where he is today without recognizing a special talent still more than capable of doing a job for him.
Good luck Micheal, I'm just sorry your time at the Toon didn't work out!
