Why I want Murray to lose

11:59am Friday 3rd July 2009

I have a confession to make - I don't want Andy Murray to win Wimbledon.

While millions around the country are desperate for Murray to become Britain's first men's champion for 71 years, I hope he loses.

I'm a big tennis fan and have been watching Wimbledon since I was a little boy and I fully understand the weight of expectation on Murray's shoulders.

He has developed into a fabulous player and he has a great chance of beating Andy Roddick in the semi-finals this afternoon.

But I'm rooting for Roger Federer to become the greatest tennis player of all-time by winning his 15th major and beating the record of Pete Sampras.

Federer is my favourite sportsman. His artistry on court is a joy to watch and he has a charisma which is lacking in Murray.

Winning his sixth Wimbledon would crown one of the most remarkable careers in sport - and that would mean more to me than seeing a Briton win for the first time in more than 70 years.

The country will come to a standstill on Sunday if it comes down to a Federer versus Murray final - but I'll be shouting for the Swiss.
