In a blog last year I told of how Andrew Crow had brought a ‘stone hammer’ back from holiday. An unusual item it must be said, but this year, the lad has surpassed himself!
I met up with Andy in Durham last Saturday after Jeff Sparks had organised a ‘posse’ of about twenty lads from Cockfield for a night out. It seemed like everyone was there from Hutchy to Chad, Burton, and Hoggy, Duncan and young Tupper to name but a few. It was, as they say, ‘a cracking night out’ and good to catch up with the lads. The Champagne Bar however, was a bit ‘posh’ for Cockfield lads but The Fighting Cocks seemed to be the place for us. I digress!
Duncan was giving Andy a bit of stick about last years holiday purchase when the crafty builder declared; “That’s nowt youngan, I brought a long handled shovel back this year!”
STUNNED SILENCE!
“You’ve brought a bloody SPADE back from Crete?” says Duncan laughing his head off. “NO!” says Andy, “It’s called a ‘Spanish Shovel’ and it’s got an especially long handle and a pointy front to make it easy to use, you can shift loads of gear with it!”
It turns out that the locals used to clear pebbles from the sea with the spade - sorry, shovel - and, as Andy and his misses were on the beach by 7am every morning, he took it upon himself to clear away the pebbles and took a shine to the implement. Thinking that this marvellous invention was only available in Crete, a quick call into the local B&Q - or equivalent - and the new bizarre holiday purchase was made!
Andy said he wrapped it up for the flight home with a ‘fragile’ sticker on it and it fair flew through customs and into the planes hold. (I bet they see it every day!)
It’s only my opinion, but this lad needs to learn how to RELAX on holiday!!
