Out and about at a local quoits match the other night and the inevitable ‘domino card’ appeared after the game.
It put me in mind of when Tupper used to run them down the Bottom House for Cockfield FC.
Sometimes people write their full name down, some use a knick-name, others like to have a laugh and use names that they hope will embarrass the caller, for example ‘R. Soles’. One person - not a million miles away - once wrote the name ‘Dixie Normus’ and when the caller shouted “Who’s Dixie Normus?” about ten hands went up! On occasion, if someone’s playing cards or pool, for quickness they’ll just put an ‘X’ or two.
This is what happened one Sunday afternoon. Tupper had sold all the spaces on the domino card and had done the draw. As he revealed the winner he looked at the card and saw it belonged to someone who had simply put XXX. “And the winner is…” says Tupper, “KISS KISS KISS!”
Mind you, I also remember the night at the club when ’Our Hero’ was selling raffle tickets for the football club. Proudly returning to the secretary with a wad of cash but NO counterfoils; He’d SOLD them as well! TWO draws were made and the club doubled their money; All’s well that ends well!!
