IT has taken five controversial years, but the stadium George Reynolds built has finally been seen in all its glory.
Elton John came to Darlington on Saturday night and the town proved it can host world-class entertainment events.
From the moment he came on stage and sang Love Lies Bleeding, to his departure with Your Song, Elton was the ultimate showman - and an estimated crowd of 17,000 people responded accordingly.
It was, quite simply, a night the people of Darlington will never forget and, if the town can do it once, it can do it again.
Managing such a large crowd will always have its problems but the event was superbly organised, and that was crucial if Darlington is to build a reputation as a destination for the stars.
Even the weather played its part, with black clouds threatening but giving way to make it a pleasant summer's evening.
We look forward to building on the success of Saturday night, and every possible support must be given to Darlington Football Club in attracting other concerts.
It is great for the town, a welcome boost to the local economy, and the only way the club can hope to balance the books.
Our congratulations go to all those involved in making a dream a reality.
And for all the disagreements we have had with him over the years, we should remember that they include George Reynolds - because it wouldn't have happened without him.
