SINCERE thanks to The Northern Echo and especially Gavin Engelbrecht for the brilliant full page tribute in Wednesday’s Echo regarding the funeral of great Durham City ‘Lad’ Francis ‘Frankie’ Grant who died at the grand old age of 92.
Frankie was a very good friend as I played for Durham City RFC for 32 seasons and then served two years as Club President and Frankie did lots of jobs around the Club.
Frankie never played Rugby but he fought in WW2 in the Navy and the Army. He was an ever present at our Players Dinner always on the top table and my wife used to taxi Frankie and I down to the Club that night.
The next day bright and early he was on the phone thanking us for our kindness. He was a true Durham Lad serving with honour on the Mayor’s Bodyguard for 27 years.
The DLI were present at St Giles church in force and the Last Post sounding in the church was spine tingling. Frankie was buried in his Durham City Club tracksuit next to his mother Uretta at Durham Crematorium.
He will be sadly missed. Lovely ‘Lad’.
