AS a beer drinker, I get extremely annoyed when I am served a pint with an inch of expensive froth.

The crucial top-up should be automatic. Unfortunately, the problem of the short measure becomes worse at Christmas, when bar staff are under pressure to move on to the next customer.

But, this is no excuse for any establishment to deny beer drinkers their statutory right to a full pint.

Line-measure glasses, with all the froth above the line, guarantee a proper pint. In my opinion, they should be mandatory.

When I buy a beer in France, there’s invariably a line on the glass and I’ve yet to be short-measured.

On this matter at least, I must reluctantly agree we’ve got something to learn from Europe.
