FURTHER to article ‘Mayor reveals vision for steelworks site’ (Echo, Oct 19). Many will want to see the redundant SSI steel site in and around Redcar regenerated with well paid jobs.
If one were to go back to former steel making areas like Consett and Ravenscraig in Scotland and speak to the locals, especially taxi drivers, they might tell you that they now have clean light industrial jobs but paying less than former steel jobs.
However we have a very big asset with the Teesport site.
One hopes a 25-year plan with 20,000 jobs will bring some jobs sooner rather than later, especially as early new jobs will help to keep our younger people here on Teesside.
However as many have said a hard closure should never have happened and mothballing was the answer, similar to when steelmaking got into difficulties previously.
Notwithstanding recent history we must move on and look to a different future.
George Dunning, Ormesby
