Clement Attlee who served as Prime Minister between 1945 and 1951
BEING of the same great vintage (born 1943) as VJ Connor (HAS, Oct 16), I agree totally with his sentiments regarding various Prime Ministers.
In my opinion, we have not had a decent one since Clement Attlee. It has only gone downhill since 1951. This brings to mind two very pertinent quotations by philosopher Joseph de Maistre (1753-1821).
He said: “Every nation gets the government it deserves.” And: “In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve.”
Which begs the question: where did we go wrong?
