AFTER another below par performance by an England squad I hear and watch television pundits and sport reporters referring to England as a team.

I would like to enlighten these people with the knowledge that, since 1966, the word ‘team’, has been replaced by the words, ‘mixed grill’.

Most of the players called upon by England are strangers to each other up to the time they take the field and are chosen, mainly, to cover a place on a drawing board irrespective of individual flair or natural ability.

How football has changed. I seem to remember when football was played going forward attacking the opponent’s goal.

However, England seem to prefer the back pass.
