Why do you cycle?

Primarily because it is the only way to get around in the urban area. I know how long every journey will take come traffic, wind, rain or sun. I know when to leave and exactly when i shall arrive. Secondly to keep fit. Thirdly to save the planet. Fourthly because I enjoy it, I am dependent upon no one ... just my beloved bike!

Jon Snow gives evidence at the Government's Get Britain Cycling Inquiry in 2013 in his role as President of Cycling UK.

What do you ride?

I ride a 'cross-bred' Condor Fratello - more town bike - to cope with pot holes - than road bike.

Your favourite route?

From my home in Primrose Hill down through Regents Park to the cross London West East bikeway, back onto the main road at Grays Inn Road, to the Channel 4 News studios. A daily commute of 13 minutes - 11.5 minutes if I push it hard!

Your best cycling memory?

It was 1,000 miles in ten days for the British Heart Foundation from South East Italy across to Naples, up to Rome, Assisi , Florence, Ravenna and into Venice.

What do you consider your most important piece of cycling equipment?

My helmet. I dupe myself into believing that it protects what little brain I possess.

If you could cycle anywhere where would that be?

I lived in Washington DC for four years, a beautiful cycling city!
