MY first car, pictured on Crook market place, was a 1946 Austin Eight bought from GW Holmes garage in Etherley.
I bought the car on the day I passed my driving test – May 28, 1962.
The headlights dipped by turning the offside headlight off and tilting the nearside headlight lens forward. It had six volt electrics and no heater and the winter of 1962/63 was very cold.
The brakes faded going down Softly Bank into Stanhope – they were rod operated.
I eventually sold the car to a friend.

My second car was a 1952 E93a Ford Prefect, which is pictured at Gate House Filling Station, Fir Tree.
The car was fitted with vacuum operated windscreen wipers, which meant that the harder the engine pulled the slower the wipers went. So at the top of a hill the wipers did not work. Again it had six volt electrics and no heater.
After 18 months I sold it for what I paid for it - £50.
I currently own a 2012 VW Golf Match Tdi after a 30-year association with Saab.
