What was your first car?

My first car was a rusty old Ford Anglia back in 1970 when I was a trainee journalist on a newspaper in Doncaster. I paid £75 privately for it, took it to be checked by my father's garage at home down south. They told me it was a death trap, so I took it back to the bloke I bought it off. Luckily he agreed to take it back and gave me £70! Lesson learned.

How many times did it take to pass your test?

I needed two efforts to pass my test. The first time I kept rolling back on a hill start. Nightmare! I was taught via formal lessons with a driving instructor and by my father.

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?

My ideal passenger would probably be Eric Morecambe, my hero. A very funny man, of course, but like me a passionate supporter of Luton Town Football Club. I interviewed him on breakfast television shortly before he died and it is a treasured memory. I would to show him some of my favourite countryside in Shropshire - my father's home territory - Derbyshire - where my mother came from - and Hertfordshire - where I was born and brought up. It would also be interesting to see around Morecambe and the Lake District where he grew up. We'd probably take in a few beautiful cricket grounds too!

What is your dream car?

A modern sporty Jag probably - they have great lines, I think, and all mod cons inside, plus a bit of poke!

How would you describe your driving style?

I think I am fairly careful, but I do get terribly frustrated by traffic jams and drivers who are desperately slow pulling away from the lights etc!

Tell me one driving anecdote from your past?

A door handle came off once years ago in a Datsun of mine. I needed to get inside the door panel to sort it out. When I got in there I was driven bonkers by a pane of glass lodged there which totally got in the way of what I was trying to do. Why on earth did the manufacturer put a piece of glass in there? It took someone else to point out it was the window and I just needed to wind it back up! I am not very technical!

What are you listening to?

The Northern Echo: The Beatles.jpg

I mostly listen to 60s music which is far and away the best era as far as I am concerned. I was a teenager in the 60s and feel very lucky to have been that age when the Beatles and so many more wonderful bands broke onto the scene. I've been fortunate through my job to meet so many stars whose records I was buying some 50 years ago!

What do you drive now?

I drive an Audi A5. I like the look of it. It is a blue one, my favourite colour and Audis are so very reliable.
