GERALD Ratner will forever be remembered for one word: ‘Crap’.

In a speech in 1991, he inadvertently wiped £500m off the value of Ratners Jewellers when he said he told people who asked why he could sell his stock so cheap: “Because it’s total crap.”

Formerly company chief executive he was relieved of the post and, in his own words, was left watching Countdown in the afternoons.

Now an accomplished public speaker, he is also selling jewellery under his GeraldOnline brand.

What was your first car?

My first car was a Triumph Herald in 1966. I was 17 it cost £525, money I saved. I bought it new from Selfridges - yes they used to sell cars. Believe it or not I still remember the number plate NML517E. I was later to smash it up.

How many times did it take to pass your test?

I passed my test on the second go. My first driving school, BSM, switched cars before my first test. This in my view contributed to me failing.

The second time was a private one man band instructor. I remember that day and even remember what the examiner said to me before passing me. It was “it is not necessary to take your hand of the wheel when indicating”. I knew I passed then as he wouldn’t be giving me tips if I had failed.

Who would be your ideal fantasy passenger and where would you go?

My ideal fantasy passenger would be Robin Van Persie, who I worship, and it would be to Old Trafford to watch him play. Although perversely I support Arsenal.

What is your dream car?

My dream car is the 1970s Mercedes 350SL. Just a beautiful car that’s never been surpassed.

How would you describe your driving style?

I do a lot of driving around the country doing conference and after dinner speeches, so often I am driving home late at night so I just put the cruise control on and relax.

Other times I am a bit impatient, but I try and leave early so I can take it easy.

Tell me an anecdote from your driving past?

In my autobiography I describe driving backwards from a snooker game in Regents Park to my home in St John’s Wood for a bet. I once drove to the top of Primrose Hill - the park - to ask someone directions as a joke. I hasten to add this was in my youth. I behave myself now.

What are you listening to?

The Northern Echo: First Aid Kit

I am listening to Dry The River, First Aid Kit, above, and Editors.

What are you driving now?

A Volvo XC60. Why ? Because I am not interested in cars any more as I am into road bikes.
