Aladdin: York Grand Opera House

THE tagline on the poster declares: "A wish come true" – and this pantomime certainly does fulfil is the wishes of those (myself included) who've criticised past shows at this venue for a distinct lack of care and flair, and happy to settle for cheap and cheerful rather than quality,

Three cheers for new producers Three Bears Panto who have obviously devoted much time, thought, energy and money to this year's show. A flying carpet soaring over the front stalls and a Ghostbusters 3D sequence are obvious additions, but as much care has gone into the staging, colourful sets and costumes and the casting.

This is a particularly well-sung Aladdin with former Hear'say star Suzanne Shaw belting out a series of numbers as Princess Yasmin and adding something to a role that, to be honest, hardly exists. Carl Tracey's Aladdin displays some fab abs, as well strong vocals and a lively presence.

Once again Stuart Wade both directs and plays Wishee Washee, who also becomes the Genie of the Lamp in this version. He's a likeable personality who has instant rapport with the audience, although the 3D sequence prompted the biggest and noisiest audience reaction..

Debbie McGee's Genie of the Ring and Fraser Hines' Emperor add some appeal, while Steve Wickenden is everything you could want from Widow Twankey – brash, bold and vulgar. Only Paul Sinha, from ITV's The Chase, disappoints with a rather nonchalant Abanazar who needs to take command of the stage as the villain of the piece.
