GAMERS have got their first glimpse of Nintendo's new console.

Named the Nintendo Switch, the console appears to be a portable, NVIDIA powered tablet-like device that can be taken out and played on the move.

It comes with a docking station that links it to a television for full screen enabled play.

It features a full-sized standard gaming controller and two portable mini controllers that can be attached to the sides of the tablet.

These miniature controllers, or Joy Con controllers as Nintendo are calling them, can also be used for split screen gameplay as each gamepad has full playability.

There also appears to be a linking component between Switch consoles allowing groups of people to play together at the same time.

Once again Nintendo will return to the use of cartridge-based games or gamecards as they're dubbed by Nintendo.

It is clear that Nintendo are sticking with their world famous franchises. The trailer showcases footage from both Zelda and Mario games as well as its new shooter series, Splatoon.

The trailer also shows extensive footage from a Switch version of Bethesda Studio’s open world RPG, Skyrim.

Nintendo have also released a list of 3rd party companies currently producing games for the Switch that features heavy-hitters like Bethesda, EA, Activision and FromSoftware.

This will be a relief to gamers as Nintendo has had numerous problems securing third party support, games or interest for it’s previous console the WiiU.

The eSports (electronic sports) capability of the Switch was highlighted as warring teams went head-to-head on Splatoon.

The best part of it all is that gamers will be able to get their hands on the Switch in March 2017.

Satoru Shibata, the president of Nintendo of Europe said: "With this first look at the Nintendo Switch, I hope that fans are already imagining the possibilities of having the freedom to play when, where and how they want to.

"Our teams at Nintendo and many other developers are all working hard to create new and unique experiences, and we look forward to showing you more."
